What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly the spine. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other techniques to align the body's structure, particularly the spine, to enable the body to heal.1
Common Techniques
- High-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) - Traditional adjustment with "pop"
- Mobilization - Gentle, low-velocity movement
- Flexion-distraction - Gentle stretching of spine
- Activator method - Instrument-assisted
- Drop table technique - Special table segments
Conditions Commonly Treated2
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Headaches (tension, cervicogenic)
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Some extremity conditions
What the Evidence Shows
- Effective for acute low back pain
- May help chronic low back pain
- Comparable to other treatments for neck pain
- May reduce headache frequency
- Best as part of multimodal care
What to Expect3
- History and examination
- May include X-rays
- Treatment plan discussed
- Adjustment sessions (15-30 minutes)
- May include exercises, advice
Safety Considerations
- Generally safe for most people
- Mild soreness common after treatment
- Serious complications rare
- Discuss with doctor if: osteoporosis, cancer, inflammatory arthritis
